In 1892, ‘Duchess’ ridden by jockey Major Hickman won the first-ever Governor’s Cup, Sri Lanka’s very own ‘Royal Ascot’; the rest, as they say, is history. Horse racing has since played an important role in Sri Lanka’s event calendar, with events such as the Governor’s Cup still being held today, drawing crowds from all over the island and gaining international exposure.
The Hill Rise and The Far Pavilion stables are now home to some of these legendary retired thoroughbred steeds that once dashed across the Nuwara Eliya track among cheering crowds. The stable experience gives you a unique opportunity to get up close with these retired racehorses.
Private, exclusive horse riding lessons can also be arranged with a professional jockey and younger half-bred steeds, providing you with a one-of-a-kind experience.

The stable manager will take you around the stable, showing you all the thoroughbred horses. You will enjoy feeding, petting, and even taking pictures with them.

Butler at Hill-Rise will escort you to our private stable at the Nuwara Eliya racecourse. Upon arrival, our stable manager will greet you with a welcome drink and a brief introduction to the racecourse and the stable. Witness the training process of two-year-old thoroughbreds transforming into racing champions. Afterwards, meet all the thoroughbred horses, enjoying feeding, petting, and photo opportunities. Conclude your visit with a delightful high tea in our garden while watching three selected horses canter on our sand track.
